Finite-temperature magnetism in bcc Fe under compression.

We investigate the contributions of finite-temperature magnetic fluctuations to the thermodynamic properties of bcc Fe as functions of pressure. First, we apply a tight-binding total-energy model parameterized to first-principles linearized augmented plane-wave computations to examine various ferromagnetic, anti-ferromagnetic, and noncollinear spin spiral states at zero temperature. The tight-b...

Finite temperature magnetism in Gd: evidence against a Stoner behavior.

The temperature dependence of the rare-earth valence bands has been regarded as a realization of the Stoner behavior. The exchange splitting of the electronic states appears to scale as the magnetic order parameter for T<T(C) and to vanish at T = T(C). We report here a spin-resolved photoemission study on the evolution of Gd bulk bands for 0.5< or =T/T(C)< or=1. The spin-polarized spectral line...

Temperature Difference Leads to Magnetism

Computer simulations suggest that creating hot and cold regions within a specific arrangement of semiconductors generates internal electric currents and magnetic fields. If borne out by experiments, the new effect, reported 8 July in Physical Review B, could lead to improvements in electronic devices that heat up in use. Experts are intrigued by the effect but remain cautious about its practica...

Interatomic exchange interactions for finite-temperature magnetism and nonequilibrium spin dynamics.

We derive ab inito exchange parameters for general noncollinear magnetic configurations, in terms of a multiple scattering formalism. We show that the general exchange formula has an anisotropiclike term even in the absence of spin-orbit coupling, and that this term is large, for instance, for collinear configuration in bcc Fe, whereas for fcc Ni it is quite small. We demonstrate that keeping t...

Finite-temperature magnetism of transition metals: an ab initio dynamical mean-field theory.

We present an ab initio quantum theory of the finite-temperature magnetism of iron and nickel. A recently developed technique which combines dynamical mean-field theory with realistic electronic structure methods successfully describes the many-body features of the one electron spectra and the observed magnetic moments below and above the Curie temperature.
